My people have never allowed me to experience a direct encounter with snow, due to the not unreasonable concern that I may not be physically equipped to tolerate the extreme cold. Is this overly cautious? Can I play in the snow?

My girl-person resolved to become "glamorous, prolific, and bohemian" in 2010. Personally, I think she ought to focus a bit more on the "prolific" aspect of her resolution, and less on being "glamorous and bohemian."

If, by any chance, you saw Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, or a trailer for the film, and wondered what it would be like to view it under the influence of psilocybin mushrooms, I will tell you: it was intense. Being a rabbit, I will never have the opportunity to skydive or bungee jump, but I cannot imagine that those physical thrills could equal the mental ride that I have taken.

As I have mentioned repeatedly on this tumblelog, I had been eagerly anticipating this experience for some time. On Friday evening, my people and I attended the 10:00 pm showing at the Sundance Kabuki Cinema, our favorite movie theater. In preparation for this momentous occasion, I had previously procured a small quantity of mushrooms. (Since I am a rather introverted house rabbit, with little in the way of “connections,” as it were, this was no small task. But I was determined, and persevered accordingly.)

I have consumed psilocybin mushrooms in various doses, via various ingestion methods, under various circumstances, but only once before have I attempted to watch an entire feature film while “tripping.” (That film, naturally, was Disney’s animated version of Alice in Wonderland. (SPOILER ALERT: This was better.)) I presumed that sitting through a film in a movie theater, in 3D, on opening night, would be a more challenging experience, and so I gave considerable thought to the ideal dose, ingestion method, and timing.

I have found that consuming the mushrooms via tea tends to result in a shorter “trip,” with fewer unpleasant gastrointestinal effects. And so I determined that tea would be the ideal ingestion method for my purposes. As for the dose, I was less certain. My intention was not to “trip balls,” per se, merely to heighten my perception of color and sound, and, ultimately, achieve the illusion that I had literally been transported into the fantasy landscape of the film.

So. I settled on 1.5 grams, torn into pieces (as opposed to ground into a fine powder, which most mushroom tea recipes suggest), steeped in simmering water for fifteen minutes. I then strained out the soggy mushroom remains and poured the psilocybin-infused water into a mug with a teabag (chamomile) and a generous dollop of honey. I prepared and drank the tea (on an empty stomach) immediately prior to leaving the apartment. It was so delicious (in marked contrast to my last attempt at mushroom tea) that I wondered whether there would be any psychedelic effect at all. It seemed impossible that my concoction could be so tasty and also impart the desired results. And yet, I am pleased to report that the timing, dosage, and ingestion method worked out as perfectly as I could have dared to hope.

(In case any readers are pondering a similar endeavor, I would generally recommend a dose of one to two grams, depending on your tolerance, your experience and comfort level with psychedelics, and how recently you have eaten that day. When I repeat these steps for The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, I may consider reducing my dose slightly, to one or 1.25 grams.)

The tea provided a wonderful enhancement to the film. I was utterly transfixed and awed, from the opening credits through to the end credits. I was unable to differentiate between the 3D effect and the effects of the mushrooms, and so I cannot critique either separately. But the overall sensation was exactly as I hoped, the closest I have ever felt to being inside an imaginary world. No film, book, or amusement park ride has ever transported me so successfully. For a tantalizingly brief stretch of time, I was in Wonderland, and it was a dream come true.

I am so grateful that my existence on earth happened to synchronize with the release of this film, for when I die, I will take the memory of this sensory smorgasbord with me wherever I go. The impressions that this experience has left will paint the walls of my own personal rabbit heaven.

P.S. Alice in Wonderland was SO FUCKING CRAZY. I have so much to say about it but most of it will have to wait until I have had some time to compose myself. (The one thing that I will say is that everything was absolutely perfect, except I do think Anne Hathaway’s makeup could have been better, and also if only I could have smoked a joint or two in the theater, that would have been truly superb. But otherwise, perfect.)
